Digital or Mechanical Dosing?
Digital Dosing
Digital dosing pumps are adjusted electronically across a broad operating range, with turndown of up to 1:3000 on the smallest DDA. They can offer monitoring and process-control functions.
Mechanical Dosing
Mechanical diaphragm pumps such as DMX are adjusted by stroke length, with a 10:1 turndown. They suit duties where advanced digital process control is not required.
frequently asked questions
What is a dosing pump?
A dosing pump delivers a controlled quantity of chemical into a water or process stream. Common applications include disinfection, pH adjustment, water treatment and industrial chemical treatment.
What is the difference between Grundfos DDA, DDC and DDE?
All three are Grundfos SMART Digital pumps. DDE offers manual and pulse control, DDC adds analogue control on AR versions, and DDA adds batch, timer, fieldbus and, on FC and FCM versions, process monitoring.
What do FC and FCM mean on a Grundfos DDA?
They are DDA control variants. FC versions include FlowControl, which monitors the dosing process and gives selective fault diagnosis. FCM versions also measure flow and monitor pressure, and include the AutoFlowAdapt function.
How do I select the correct chemical dosing pump?
Start with dosing flow and discharge pressure, which set the pump size. The chemical, its concentration and temperature then decide the materials of the wetted parts. Finally, decide how the pump will be controlled.
Can dosing pumps be used with sodium hypochlorite?
Yes, with the right pump and materials. Grundfos describes sodium hypochlorite as highly degassing and recommends the DDA FCM for it. DDA pumps have an auto-deaeration function to help prevent air-locking, and SlowMode on DDA and DDC lengthens the suction stroke for degassing liquids. The pump should still be selected for the specific chemical and operating conditions.
